More heads of state claim they are pro-democracy

It seems like everyone wants to be a democrat. A couple days ago we noted some of Hugo Chavez’ democratic values. George W. Bush has continually talked about spreading democracy and freedom throughout the world (at least no one can say he’s had mixed success).
Even North Korea is officially “The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”*
Putin does judo

Enter Vladimir Putin. (He does judo!)

Not only does he proudly proclaim his democrat bonafides, he claims he’s the only democrat.

Nicely done, although Hugo and George may want a few words with you.

He points out there’s stuff in the West, like Guantánamo, that shouldn’t exactly be features of a modern democracy. No word on how he defended some of his policies in Russia, besides saying “I’m not an authoritarian.”

*Any country whose name includes “People’s Republic” tends not to live up to the hype.

Grab bag: news style

The Hitchens brothers disagree on everything. Here’s Peter responding to Christopher’s book “God is not Great”. If you haven’t read any of their stuff, you’re missing out on some fascinating reading.

Billy Donovan
Billy Donovan backs out of an NBA coaching job to return to the University of Florida. Reports say he was worried the NBA would characterize him as a Munster.

Sometimes the most amazing stuff gets news coverage. Like this movement for Vermont to secede from the US. It’s a small group of people with an unrealistic goal, but nonetheless it clogs headlines. Yes, I’m living in a glass house, so sue me.

Don’t double-park in Greece: an off-duty officer (allegedly) shot a man who parked illegally when going to buy breakfast.

The Chinese are very resourceful. They’re famous for pirating DVD’s and music, but selling fake drugs is going a bit far. (My Chinese friends start to walk away for negatively stereotyping them in 3, 2, 1…)

Kobe vs LeBron

Some guy wrote this article: Kobe should take a page from LeBron’s book

It was mostly some nonsense about how Kobe shouldn’t have asked to be traded and should encourage his teammates more, like LeBron.

The real lesson is that Kobe should play against the weaksauce Eastern Conference.
