Professionalism is not spoken here

—– Delivery

Compelled by Allen’s demands, I went to a take-out Chinese restaurant for lunch to shore up the supply of Monday Fighters.

When I got there, there was a guy on the phone (I assume a manager) trying to sort out a problem with a delivery and a cook was there with him. Note that this was in the front, where customers placed their orders, and me and another gentleman were sitting right there. The conversation went something like this:

Manager (on phone): So you’re saying you got the wrong…were there hand rolls…OK. [places customer on hold] We can’t keep making these f****** mistakes!
Cook: …
Manager: [releases hold] Was there a small white box in the bag? That’s where the chicken-on-a-stick should be. No? [places customer on hold] You can’t keep screwing up these orders! Did you remember the chicken?
Cook: I put the chicken-on-a-stick in the white box; I remember doing it.
Manager: When we’re busy like this, we can’t keep taking all these deliveries, especially when we keep f****** up all the orders!
[After a little back-and-forth, they figure out the delivery guy had switched two of the orders. Now at least the manager can figure out what to tell the customer.]
Manager (on phone): Sir, the delivery guy switched a couple of the orders. We called him, and he’ll be back in 5-10 minutes with your order. Sorry about that. [hangs up] Man, that kid is a f****** retard. He’s a dumba**! I’ve never worked with anyone so slow!

I don’t plan on returning anytime soon, but only because the fortune cookie wasn’t that interesting.

Dilbert was actually funny on June 6th

For any continuous source of entertainment, there’s a point where the creative energies simply seem to wane, and the entertainment turns into “entertainment”.

The term for this is “jumping the shark”, from an episode of Happy Days where Fonzie jumped over a shark in water skis. I never watched the show, but get the feeling that episode must have seemed bizarre.

The Matrix reached this point about 10 minutes into the second movie.

I’m not quite sure exactly when Dilbert stopped being reliable. I usually only check it about every two weeks now.

Other comic strips have failed to be funny for years. Notable is Garfield, which ran out of juice about 15 years ago.

Tofik Benedictus Hinn is probably more or less immune to jumping the shark.

For this website, that point was June 4.

Anyway, here’s that actually funny Dilbert strip.

Whither the engagement ring

Diamond Ring

Is it just me, or is this article making a bigger stink about engagement rings than necessary: Diamonds Are a Girl’s Worst Friend? The author brings up some interesting information, but completely fails on this point: the symbol of a ring means something different in 2007. For instance:

Rather, its presence on a woman’s finger suggests that she needs to trap a man into “commitment” or be damaged if he leaves.

Huh? And the number of people today who think this way is…?

The article also notes that the diamond engagement ring is a relatively new custom–which is true–but I don’t understand the point. The idea of some sort of ring (ie, non-diamond rings) is very old.

If one wants to say the engagement ring is useless, fine. And if one wants to discourage diamonds in particular due to the immorality of that industry, fine.* But to say engagement rings are demeaning seems a little far, and doesn’t take into account the usual meaning of the ring for any particular couple.

The next girl I ask to marry is getting (or at least being offered) an engagement ring. For me, it’s a symbol of a willingness to make a sacrifice–in this case financial–for something I may not have a particular use for, but will make my partner happy.

*I’ll probably spring for a different type of gem.
