"Besides, being a mascot has its advantages. Like you can randomly hug cute chicks and no one’s going to freak out. But you have to touch some men, too, so no one gets suspicious." -- The Mascot
Well, I’m no good at chess, but it seems as though it’s a free pawn. The rook cannot be taken in the next move if it takes the pawn. I’ve always wanted to come up with a brilliant solution to one of these things of yours, but I end up staring at the board going cross eyed. Haven’t played chess in *years*.

I don’t know what the best play is here, either, which is why I asked the question. My opponent was White in this game, and he took the Pawn. At the time, we both thought it was an obvious move.
Running it through Fritz, it gives the position as dead even after Rxe6 Nc5 (If I weren’t so lazy, I’d figure out why it prefered Nc5 to Nf6, which is the move I played, but the Knight will probably end up on e4 in any case.)
I do have some compensation for the Pawn–White’s Knight is trapped on h6, my Knight has a great post on e4, and maybe I get some pressure on the b and c files. My pawn structure sucks, though.
Actually…no. The Knight’s still protected by the Bishop on d2, so it would be a trade. I thought that my Bishop would end up being better than his Knight, so I didn’t trade. But I’m not sure that evaluation was correct.

I hope then your bishop took his knight.
