At the doctor’s

The only bad thing about going to the doctor is the lack of magazine variety. 90% of them are “Golf” and “Boating Life”; my interest in either could be represented by an imaginary number (ah, for the days when 2 ± 3i meant something). There was a copy of “Business Traveler” that I already read last month’s visit, and “Highlights”.

There was no one else in the waiting room, so I broke out the “Highlights”.

It was actually mostly readable, except for the bad jokes. Goofus and Gallant–with a major makeover–were still there (raise your hand if you liked Goofus better). The Timbertoes, too.

After re-reading the bit on Russian cultural differences in “Business Traveler”, finally got to see the doc.

He’d just gotten back from vacation, and had this report: “All I did was sit on my ass.” I told him that was too bad, but he broke a big grin and told me how great that was! He and his wife visited Israel, and the most work he did was walk with his wife to go shopping.

So we went through the regular stuff:

  • Weight. I’ve dropped six pounds in six months.* Doc didn’t like that.
  • Medicine levels A-OK.
  • Total cholesterol’s at 209. But my good cholesterol’s high, too (68, I think).

Don’t know why I made this “grilled cheese post”, but no sense in wasting all this good typing. (A “grilled cheese post” is an entry that’s a boring story of the blogger’s personal life. The term probably comes from the idea that people will post, “I had a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch today!” and think for some reason others will want to read it.)

*Written with full awareness that some readers will be jealous.

  1. See, this is the weird thing about blogs. Or people maybe. There’s no logical reason for me to care that you did or didn’t eat grilled cheese or whether your cholesterol knocks you over tomorrow. (Speaking of liquid egg product… My favorite carton/can phrase is “pasteurized homogenized artificial imitation cheese food product”.) But anyway here you hit 99 Luftballoons, chess, and the Timbertoes all in a string. You’re right in my wheelhouse, man.

  2. The doctor waiting rooms here have the same problem. That magazine used to be Children’s Activities and it was bigger and easier to read. I always liked Gallant better. Someone has to tell kids how to behave properly. It sounds like you are mostly okay. How is your appetite?

  3. …Might want to have your thyroid checked. I know someone whose thyroid is hyperactive. She is always hot (you were in a T Shirt in NOVEMBER when you came to see us here) and she is skin and bones. I concur with Grandmother, how *is* your appetite?

Ah, Highlights. When I went to the doc, she had Cosmo, Redbook, and Ladies Home Journal - every single one of which had some headline regarding sex and how to please your man. I’ll take “Find the hidden objects” in Highlights any day.

  4. Derek: Will avoid that particular “food” in the future.

Random stuff thrown together is good. Being the practitioner of “media, chess, security, food - claptrap, bunkum and amphigory” you know all about that, though!

Grandma: Gallant may be well-behaved, but that’s boring! ;) My appetite’s fine (I think), but I don’t eat a lot somedays. Especially those days when I’m completely sedentary.

Annie: Yes, I wore a T-shirt (it was in February), but that’s only because I didn’t check the weather. Didn’t realize it was going to get in the upper 30’s at night.

    Sex sells.

  5. ok that is sad… it was february wasn’t it…I’ve totally forgotten. I just know it was cold. 209 is fair to middlin’. My own cholesterol was about 234 and I had to freaking choke down 2 tubs of oatmeal and work out like crazy to get back to 185 where it is now.

hubby is ungrounded for now. we have blockbuster total access so if I don’t like the movie I can always just leave the room :-D
