Experiment in TIR

In Bryce 6, there’s this feature called TIR (total internal reflection) which is supposed to be neat-o for renders of objects that naturally have…internal reflections.

Like gemstones. Looks a’ight, I suppose (click for bigger version).

  1. you know what’s really cool but not quite related to this post… there’s a way you can tell if a diamond is real or not. Just stand in a dark room and point a laser straight into the top of the diamond. If the diamond reflects the laser into lots of tiny dots around the room, it’s real. Carlos and I tried it. I have to say there was some anxiety ’cause he got my ring at a flea market.

  2. Did you ever try it with a cubic zirconia?

  3. @Annie: Had no idea. That’s pretty cool, and maybe I’ll pick up a cheap laser just to see it. I wonder how Bryce will handle it.

And thanks for reminding us a flea market is not the preferred place to purchase a diamond ring. :D

@Allen: Instead of a bunch of dots, you’ll see a picture of Barry Manilow.

  4. We are actually at this very moment trying to find a CZ or something similar. I’m so curious I’m about to go to JCPEnney and snag something from their costume jewelry department. heehee we’ll keep you posted on the results.
