Inspiring or depressing?
Meet Ashley Qualls. Three years ago, at 14 years old, she started a website (with $8 borrowed from her mother) that posted downloadable MySpace themes for free. Now? The site grosses $1 million/year, and which allowed her to do stuff like buying a house for her family. (Full story here.)
Inspiring: Wow, I could do that, too! I just need to borrow $8 from my mom.
Depressing: You know she got lucky. There are very good reasons why this happens so rarely. There are people who are better than her at what she does, but without the same success.

Oh, man, that is upsetting.
Reply to Kate DinoHmmm.. maybe I can sell themed chess backgrounds with quotes from famous chess players to other bloggers! I’ll be rich man!
Seriously, this is disturbing. Getting that rich on a nitch market. Once the flash in the pan burns out, what will she have to fall back on? Oh yeah, she could live off the interest of her million.
Reply to Blunderpronethere is always the Store de Garbage… who knows, maybe you could be the next Onion.
Whenever I hear stories like this I think to myself, money isn’t everything, look at Britney.
Reply to annieOnly eight bucks? Cool, that’s totally within my budget! I might actually be able to fork out $10, and with the same kind of margin I should make some $1,250,000. Sweet.
Reply to ChessaholicWhat would the interest be for a million dollars in the bank? If it is the same as the inflation rate then it would be the same as living off the million dollars itself year after year wouldn’t it? In which case something like a 50,000 dollars a year life style would give 20 years of work free life. Then when she is old I guess it would be time to go back to work. Or is the interest usually larger than inflation for that much money?
Reply to l3rucewayneOh right, a million a year, not a million total. Well I guess that would make that problem not a problem after all.
Reply to l3rucewayneI once advised Michael Dell to “stay in school”.
