Intrepid adventurer pwns KFC’s $10 challenge
I write this post with a heavy heart, especially remembering that KFC has endorsed LEP before as a bastion of compelling blogging. However, a recent advertisement was too much to deal with, a blow against those of us who appreciate home cooking. No matter how often we burn our grilled cheese sandwiches to a crisp.
So KFC’s ad is the $10 challenge, claiming that we can’t do what KFC does for that price: provide a meal of 7 pieces of fried chicken, 4 biscuits, and a large side dish. You can view it here.
It’s a terribad commercial: the challengees didn’t seem to realize you don’t need a 5 lb bag of flour to coat seven pieces of chicken, for example. I was actually going to take up the challenge myself, but someone’s already done it with $2 to spare.
On some Sundays, I like to cook a meal of fried chicken, scalloped potatoes, and mixed vegetables. Might cross the $10 mark, but boy is it an upgrade from fast food!

“On the contrary, cooking is a vital, spiritual act that should be performed with a certain reverence. ” – best quote I’ve read today.
The ad is done quickly and directed at glaze-eyed couch potatoes overloaded by bad TV. It would have been a better ad had it been focused on effort rather than finances. Because making fried chicken is kind of a pain in the buttocks. I do prefer Church’s.
Reply to annieNot too many KFC’rs look like the family in the commercial! I’m gonna go workout. I gained weight just watching that.
Reply to likesforestssad thing is most people will watch it and just figure they are right, it´s futile to try and cook an actual meal, and will go eat fast food. also, KFC has the ability to buy in bulk, so they get a bazillion chicken legs for the price we pay for one chicken
Reply to chessloserWhat kind of salesmanship is it to basically say to your customers “you don’t have what it takes to do what we do, so you better leave it to us.” I agree its a bad and somewhat patronizing ad.
Reply to l3rucewayne@Annie: A “dry hand, wet hand” technique helps, along with brushes and spoons.
@Likesforests: They used non-American actors and dubbed over the voices.
@chessloser: The Mexican sojourner! Hey, if you get a chance, you should check out a Mexican KFC and see if the food they sell is any different.
@l3rucewayne: Patronizing is a great word for that commercial. It’s a bit of an insult.
Reply to DonnieI’ve actually been to a chicken chain called “pollo campero”; it’s the Central American equivalent to KFC. The food tastes slightly superior..but only just. The chicken is actually marinated, not really breaded, but it is deep fried.
