Some accomplishments need not be celebrated

It’s official: the Guinness Book of World Records has listed Manuel Uribe as the world’s fattest human. He peaked at over 1,200 lbs (560 kg).

“I’m glad to be in the Guinness Book as the fattest man,” Uribe said, and was even given a glass plaque to recognize the “accomplishment”.

I always wonder what constitutes an “achievement” in this country. I mean of course superlatives rule, but why do we seem to gravitate towards things that are mildly entertaining but barely educational? Like, you’ll definitely hear about the world’s eating champion, but a car bomb in Iraq will make a mere blip on the news radar.

If it’s unusual, it can make big news. Car bombs in Iraq, unfortunately, are no longer unusual.

Don’t you get some sort of award for making it back from vacation safely?
