Can someone play a game worthy of a brilliancy prize instead of “well, he blundered, then I blundered, so I lost”? I’m not sure if we can even have a “greatest upset” prize because almost every time it’s not a surprise who wins and loses.
eg: I went up two Pawns early on Rocky Rook, and thought I’d have an easy win. But he rocked me in the middlegame and came out with the advantage. But then he messed up allowing me to win.

Yes! Only four people left in the race for perfection… how exciting!

4? Am I reading it wrong, it looks like two to me. I guess I’m hoping for 3rd-5th myself.

No obvious horrible errors until it was too late anyway.
Brilliant? Well, it was a nice attack…

I don’t plan on being involved in that.
Comment by Tacticus Maximus | 3 March 2008
Bruce, you’re only looking at the sunny side of perfection.
Comment by Allen | 3 March 2008
Hmmm, tact is that a guarantee as the #1 seed? Though your analysis of my game with RLP kinda has me nervous. I hate think what you’ll see as we’re playing.
Comment by Polly | 3 March 2008
Huh, what? Nooooo! There must be some mistake! I had good money on Donnie going 0-9. Who knew he had enough dough to bribe his opponent?
Comment by The Mascot | 3 March 2008
I beat gorckat. He went crazy and threw all kinds of pieces at me, came up with some interesting stuff but no mate.
What’s an upset??
Comment by drunknknite | 3 March 2008
I find it very interesting that there are no draws so far this tournament. A lot of fighters we have here!
Comment by drunknknite | 3 March 2008
Would you like to draw with me drunknknite? Sounds good to me;-).
Comment by l3rucewayne | 3 March 2008
Wow. I didn’t realize I struck fear into the heart of The Dark Knight himself. Do I have white or black? (not that it matters, but if I’m White it’s impolite to offer while it’s my move and if I’m Black I’ll wait for your move to address your offer)
Comment by drunknknite | 3 March 2008
@Allen: If all 4 maintain perfection, you’ll have to buy $20 worth of McDonald’s gift cards! (Fortunately for you, this is impossible.)
@l3rucewayne: Did you hear the radio promo for “Semi Pro”? The protagonist’s team needs only to get 4th place to become an NBA squad, so you all hear them chanting “4th place!”
@Tacticus: Granted, it wasn’t the usual foul-up we’ve been seeing lately.
And you will be part of an upset if I have anything to say about it.
@Polly: Don’t worry about Tacticus; he’s the type of player that sets a low-ball goal of reaching 2200.
@Mascot: It wasn’t a bribe; I’m just using the bathroom a lot more.
@drunknknite: Pretty much most of us are in the same mosh pit…the extent of upsets will be anyone beating or drawing you or Tacticus (except each other, of course). Although I suppose it could be extended if one of the 1400’s knocks off one of the 1600’s, because there’s actually a decent chance of that happening.
I was going to note the lack of draws as well. I’m thinking ahead of how to format the next tourney, including the idea of 3 point win and 1 point draw. But it doesn’t look like it’ll make a difference…
Comment by Donnie | 3 March 2008
Sadly I did not hear the promo, haven’t been listening to the radio much lately. But I’ll keep my ears tuned tomorrow probably for the elections.
drunknknite: Fear! Me?! I, I, I, I LAUGH at that!!! BTW I’ll be white, so lets hear the acceptance of that draw offer! If only we were playing in a dark alley…
Comment by l3rucewayne | 4 March 2008
Oh, right, the move… alright see you then.
Comment by l3rucewayne | 4 March 2008
Luckily for me, the most I’ll end up having to pay is $10!
Comment by Allen | 4 March 2008
Has anyone seen gorckat around?
Comment by Tom | 4 March 2008
LEP: Can you play Wednesday night around 9:30 pm? EST 9:30 am would also work for me, but most people are working at that hour.
Comment by Polly | 5 March 2008
@l3rucewayne: Looks like you’ll have to earn your draw. Sorry.
@Allen: Yes, and chances are it will be less. Not that your employer is stingy enough to make $10 a tough commitment.
@Tom: He seems to be taking a bit long in the restroom. He hasn’t updated his blog in a while, and I haven’t heard from him otherwise.
@Polly: See you in 20 min!

Egg McMuffins have been 2 for $2. That means the $5 gift card will allow for 4 plus enough for tax. This should make for a good potential picture of the victor.
Comment by Allen | 6 March 2008
sister, I lost to mandalorian. There is no way he is a 1400 player. I mean, all right, I wasn’t having my best day, but still… he beat me baaaad man.

Tacticus M. v. RLP at around 1:15 PST today–come by and watch the fight!
Comment by Wahrheit | 8 March 2008
Looks like my game with gorckat will not be completed this week. I have been unable to contact him to schedule our game. I will schedule it as soon as I am able to.
Comment by Tom | 8 March 2008
I lost to Wahrheit.
Biggest upset so far? I’ll post the game on my site after running it through Fritz.
Comment by Tacticus Maximus | 8 March 2008

I had scrambled eggs this week. When I get back to New York I’ll post the game.

@Allen: Too bad the 2 for $2 is probably “for a limited time”. Some Arby’s have been having their 4/$5, 3/$5, or 2/$5 deals, if you like that sort of thing.
@l3rucewayne: chessloser has already bragged about his exploit, so your comment’s been released already. (You probably wanted to avoid international shame until Monday.)
@Wahrheit: Did you know you’d win so you’d have a big audience?
Unfortunately, I could only show up for the ending. But I salute your victory!
@Tom: It’s a good bet gorckat’s been consumed by something called Real Life. No biggie on not being able to play; just play when you can.
@Tacticus: Although chessloser beat l3rucewayne this week, you still take the prize so far. Now I can check out why you were (for practical purposes) playing down a Bishop.
@Polly: We found out that, unlike Bobby Fischer, I can’t give Knight odds to any woman in the world.
