That I have not heard! I’m assuming that meant they weren’t supposed to take tips, and only received a salary (otherwise they’d have the motivation to keep working).

The story I’ve always heard was that Soviet Taxi drivers only had to fulfil a quota. So once they drove x number of people a day, they didn’t give a rat’s ass. So… the only way to get their attention was perhaps a pack of cigarettes or foreign currency…

Allen: Fill me in. I’ve heard that Soviet taxi drivers were pretty wealthy because they were tipped in foreign currencies.

Annie: People do go hungry here, but that’s because they can’t afford food, not for lack of food availability.

it’s caused by the redistribution of property that the communist governments always do.

there’s also less incentive to actually work. did you ever hear the story of taxi drivers in Communist Moscow?
